Over 2013-15 Victoria created these paintings as master studies of paintings by Sandro Botticelli, Jan Vermeer and Caravaggio all in homage to these exquisite artists. Two of the paintings ‘after’ Vermeer’s original works are depicted as rare archaeological ostracons. The paintings ‘after’ Caravaggio are reinterpretations of his works incorporating aspects from different paintings.
By completing Master Studies in this way, the finer details of composition, colour harmonies, together with the artist’s painting methods can be researched. Renaissance artists followed a very methodical process allowing their paintings to be seen today as fresh as the day they were originally painted.
