Over 2013-15 Victoria created the paintings shown here, as studies of paintings by Sandro Botticelli, Jan Vermeer and Caravaggio created in homage to these exquisite artists. Two of the paintings ‘after’ Vermeer’s original works are depicted as rare archaeological ostracons. The paintings recreated ‘after’ Caravaggio are reinterpretations involving aspects from different paintings. By completing Master Studies in this way, the finer details of pictorial design, and complex colour harmonies, together with the artist’s painting methods were researched. Renaissance artists followed a methodical process allowing their paintings to be seen today as fresh as the day they were painted.
