Over 2013-15 Victoria created these master studies of paintings by Sandro Botticelli, Jan Vermeer and Caravaggio in homage to these truly exquisite artists. Two of the paintings below ‘after’ Vermeer’s original works are depicted as rare archaeological ostracons. The paintings ‘after’ Caravaggio are reinterpretations of his works, incorporating aspects from different paintings. By the process of completing master studies, the finer details of composition, colour harmonies, together with the artist’s painting methods can be researched. Renaissance artists followed a very methodical process which allows their paintings to be seen today, as fresh as the day they were originally painted.
